History of the Plan

  1. 2007

    Organizational partners were recruited and a coalition was established as a public-private partnership.

    An interim Coordinating Committee was formed to guide the development of the NPAP.

    The NPAP project was initiated with funding from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

  2. 2008

    The Coordinating Committee developed the NPAP vision, mission, and goals as well as plans for launch, implementation, and evaluation of the forthcoming NPAP.

    Sector working groups were formed, one to represent each of the right societal sectors.

  3. 2009

    The first NPAP conference was held in Washington D.C. to facilitate development of the NPAP. [Details]

    A special issue of the Journal of Physical Activity and Health published eight white papers outlining the rationale for the forthcoming recommendations in the NPAP.

  4. 2010

    On May 3, 2010, the first U.S. National Physical Activity Plan was released during an event at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

  5. 2011

    A Memorandum of Understanding was established between the National Physical Activity Plan Alliance and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

  6. 2013

    The National Physical Activity Plan Alliance was established as a formal non-profit (501c3) organization.

  7. 2014

    Implementing Physical Activity Strategies” was published by Human Kinetics.

    The 2014 US Report Card on Physical Activity and Children and Youth was released.

  8. 2015

    The NPAP Congress was held in Washington D.C. [Details]

    Step It Up! The Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Promote Walking and Walkable Communities was released in September. The NPAPA was vital in the dissemination of the Call to Action.

    A draft of the revised NPAP was circulated for public comment.

  9. 2016

    On April 20, 2016, a new NPAP was launched during an event at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. [Details]

    In September, NPAPA released a report titled Secular Changes in Physical Education Attendance Among U.S. High School Students. [Details]

    The second edition of the U.S. Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth was released in November. [Details]

  10. 2017

    In September, NPAPA released the first comprehensive, national assessment of walking and walkability in the U.S., The 2017 United States Report Card on Walking and Walkable Communities. [Details]

  11. 2018

    Following up to the Report Card from the year prior, the NPAPA published a report titled Promoting Walking and Walkable Communities – Cross Sector Recommendations. [Details]

    The third edition of the U.S. Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth was released in October. [Details]

    In November, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released the 2nd edition of the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. [Details]

  12. 2019

    Two manuscripts developed by NPAPA, examining U.S. Trends in Physical Education attendance and policy adherence are published. [Details]

    In May 2019, the National Physical Activity Plan Alliance announced the election of 4 new Board Officers. [Details]
