2015 NPAP Congress
On February 23-24, 2015 over 250 professionals from a wide range of fields attended the NPAP Congress at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. The Congress opened with a keynote lecture by Dr. Wanda Jones, the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in which she emphasized the importance of partnerships in promoting physical activity. A second keynote, delivered by Mark Fenton, focused on environment and policy changes that support physical activity as part of daily life.
The Congress highlighted important developments and opportunities in the physical activity and public health field through ten thematic panel sessions, poster presentations, and an awards ceremony recognizing organizations successfully implementing the NPAP. The awards ceremony, emceed by Dr. Pamela Peeke, named three organizations the first NPAP Champions – Space to Grow, Chicago, IL; Get Fit Kauai, Kauai County, HI; and Seguin ISD Student Health Advisory Council, Seguin, TX. Dr. Kenneth E. Powell, a pioneer in the field of physical activity and public health, received the Honor Award for lifetime achievement and Dr. Steven Blair was presented with the President’s Council Lifetime Achievement Award.
Attendees also discussed revisions to the National Physical Activity Plan. Sector Expert Panels presented suggested updates to the Plan based on the most current state of science, policy, and practice. Breakout sessions were held for each NPAP sector for a more in-depth discussion of the suggested updates. Sector panels used the feedback provided at the Congress to continue to finalize updates to the NPAP. The input from this Congress led to a revised NPAP draft which was circulated for public comment later in 2015.
